More Info on Freshwater Pearls
Freshwater pearls are grown in mussels and farmed in freshwater. The high nacre and luster comes from the fact that freshwater pearls are nucleated with a small piece of mantel tissue and results in more actual pearl and less core material. Freshwater pearls have a unique and off round shape since they are not started with a perfectly round bead nucleolus like saltwater pearls. Freshwater pearls are usually less expensive than other types of pearls because freshwater mussels are larger and can produce up to 35 to 40 pearls at a time. Saltwater pearls such as oysters produce typically 5 pearls at a time.
